How to store avocados to keep them fresh for weeks: a life hack
In recent years, avocados have become one of the staples of progressive housewives. It is ideal for making guacamole and also tastes great in a salad or on plain toast. But avocados have one significant drawback – they become soft and overripe almost instantly.
However, by following the rules of avocado storage, its shelf life can be significantly extended. Charles Haverfield, packaging manager at US Packaging and Wrapping, explained to the Mirror that the shelf life of an avocado depends on its level of ripeness at the time of purchase.
He advises buying light green avocados and storing them in the refrigerator until they are ripe. According to Charles, this way, the avocado will not spoil within a week of purchase.
He also noted that if stored properly, a ripe avocado can stay fresh for two weeks. To slow down the ripening process and prevent the avocado from turning into a mushy brown mixture, he suggests placing it in the refrigerator to keep it firmer and fresher for longer.
He also recommends storing avocados with fruits that give off the ripening gas ethylene, such as bananas and apples. It's best to keep the fruit intact for as long as possible because the enzyme in the fruit can cause it to oxidize and turn red.
