Hairdresser names the best coloring for gray hair: why you should choose "smokey" technique
The most common way to disguise gray hair is classic coloring, which radically changes silver strands to other natural colors. Recently, however, more and more people with gray hair have been giving preference to self-expression and emphasizing their age with smokey highlights.
Hairdresser Diego Lainz Cagigas told Marie Claire that his specialty is to lighten the strands as naturally as possible, rather than to completely repaint them. According to him, this style "performs a controlled and progressive bleaching process."
"Smokey" hair coloring is a technique that allows you to create a haze effect through the use of cold gray tones of colors. It is kind of a gradient that starts with dark roots and ends with light ash tips. This method allows the colors to blend gently and naturally, avoiding sharp contrasts.
"To achieve the perfect transition, there are two fundamental keys. It is recommended that the client has about 4/5 cm of natural root to perform 'full-babylights' bleaching throughout the hair. In this way we will achieve a more global lightening, but alternating with natural tone. Then we apply toner, which will be the perfect end to the whole process. This approach strikes a balance between the natural tones and the desired gradient, creating an elegant final effect without harsh contrasts," explains Diego.
Smooth smokey coloring effect allows gray hair to blend in with the rest of the strands and avoid visual contrast in the root zone when it grows back.
"Smokey" hair requires very careful care (as much of it is done in the salon), using shine baths with pigment to ensure the desired tone. Care at home is also very important, using masks and shampoo with purple or bluish tints," the hairdresser added.
