Why you should eat herring more often: expert answer
According to experts, herring is the most affordable and the healthiest fish at the same time. It is best eaten raw or pickled and can also be used to make salads, spreads, and forshmak. If you want to cook this fish spicy, you can fry or boil it.
Nutritionist Svitlana Fus explained the benefits of herring and how often everyone should eat it on Instagram.
"It contains quite a lot of fat, but these are healthy fatty acids, mainly omega-3. With a daily requirement of 1 to 1.5 g per day, 100 g of herring contains 2.4 g. Omega-3 fatty acids are necessary for a good diet because they are not produced in the body, and they are important for health," Fus said.
The nutritionist added that people who regularly consume omega-3 fatty acids are less likely to suffer from depression. In addition, omega-3 fatty acids improve the condition of our skin, keeping it soft, moist, and elastic, and preventing premature wrinkles.
"In addition, herring contains iodine, and 100 g of this fish will provide almost half of the daily dose of this element necessary for the thyroid gland. Herring also contains a lot of iron and selenium, about 37 mcg, while the minimum daily requirement is 50 mcg," Fus said.
The expert added that herring contains powerful antioxidants: vitamin E and selenium. Both of these nutrients are important for the immune system. They help minimize the damage caused by free radicals.
"This fish has everything we should be eating it for: minerals, vitamins, amino acids, healthy fats!" Fus summarized.
