5 stars who copied the iconic looks of Princess Diana: from the "revenge dress" to the sheep sweater. Photo
Princess Diana of Wales did not want to follow trends blindly. It would be too trite for her, a creative personality. So, although she took into account fashion trends, she rhymed them with her own chips. For example, she complemented her blouses with bow ties, her strict suits with socks or a small pea hat, and her light romantic dresses with elongated, loose-fitting blazers. Thus, her style became relaxed, unique, and exemplary for aristocrats, celebrities, and ordinary people alike.
In the OBOZ.UA article, we offer you to find out which of the stars has successfully recreated the iconic images of the "Queen of Hearts." All of them have modern interpretations, but the similarities are still visible.
1. Elizabeth Debicki
In 2023, Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki, who played Princess Diana in the TV series "The Crown," wore a black dress with a structured bodice and bare shoulders to the official premiere of the sixth season, reminiscent of one of Lady Dee's most scandalous looks. This is the "revenge dress": the Princess of Wales wore it to a charity event in 1994 (shortly after Prince Charles confessed to adultery in an interview). Debbie styled her look similarly to the "original version" with black tights and black pumps. Although she didn't wear pearl jewelry like Diana, the look was no less impressive.
2. Harry Styles
Lady Dee's style inspires not only celebrities but also men. For example, in 2019, British singer and actor Harry Styles walked down a New York street wearing a blue knitted vest with sheep, a white shirt, navy blue striped loose-fitting pants, and powder-colored shoes. It was his own interpretation of Princess Diana's outfit, which she wore to a polo match in 1981.
3. Emily Ratakovsky
American model and actress Emily Ratajkowski also sometimes draws inspiration from Lady Dee's outfits. "When I want to 'go back' to the '80s, I think of Princess Diana's street looks and pret-a-porter outfits (clothing collections created for mass production and consumption using machine sewing (not handmade by a famous couturier – Ed.)," she said in an interview with Us Weekly. In 2023, the celebrity walked in New York City in an oversized Reebok sweatshirt, white sneakers and black bicycles, reminiscent of the Princess of Wales's relaxed look in 1995. The difference is only in the colors and prints, and the idea itself is definitely borrowed.
And in 2019, Emily Ratajkowski was photographed on a Manhattan street wearing a stylish ensemble similar to the one Lady Dee wore in 1994. It's a combination of a white turtleneck with an elongated semi-fitted jacket, caramel-colored leather shoes, a leather belt and large dark glasses.
4. Marisa Tomei
In 2019, American actress Marisa Tomei honored the memory of Princess Diana at the Emmy Awards by copying her image from a state dinner in Thailand in 1988. Apparently, she chose it because it is difficult to go unnoticed in such bold colors... So, Tomei wore a one-shoulder dress with a drape, made of bright red and pink fabrics, as well as elegant earrings with pearls.
5. Emma Corrin
English actress Emma Corrin played a younger version of Princess Diana in the TV series "The Crown." She attended the wrap party for the sixth season of the series wearing a restrained top (black translucent gloves, a milky double-breasted tuxedo and a classic milky shirt with a bow tie) and a bold bottom (a translucent maxi skirt and high-heeled boots). What inspired this stylish ensemble? The outfit of the Princess of Wales during a trip to Italy in 1985. Back then, she wore an elongated milk-colored tuxedo with a bow tie, a midi skirt, black tights and black kitten heels.
