Why not everyone can lose weight: the main secret of being overweight is revealed

A person's weight directly depends not only on the caloric content of food consumed but also on the functioning of one of the organs.

Nutritionist Natalia Maltseva wrote about this on her Facebook page.

"You can often hear obese women say, 'I don't eat anything at all, and the weight doesn't go away'. In fact, "eating nothing" is not entirely true – a woman eats less than before, but the caloric content of the food she eats is enough to keep her body fat the same. But sometimes all the conditions are met, the amount of carbohydrates and fats consumed is reduced, and the arrow on the scale is stubbornly still. So, it's time to visit an endocrinologist to check how your overweight and thyroid are related.

The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the main metabolic processes: carbohydrate absorption, and breakdown of proteins and fats. All of this happens with one goal in mind – to provide us with the energy we need for every cell to function with any resources.

According to the nutritionist, this energy is provided primarily by carbohydrates. When there are few of them, the body starts processing fats. Low-carb diets are based on this rule of fat-burning.

"What happens when all reserves are used up? You need to get energy from somewhere, and muscle tissue begins to 'digest'. This is exactly what happens to those who, of their own free will or by force, are constantly seriously malnourished," the nutritionist said.

Overweight and the thyroid gland

According to the nutritionist, thyroid malfunctions can be caused by various reasons.

Low activity of hormone production, otherwise hypothyroidism

Its first signs are:

  • constant fatigue;
  • laziness;
  • dullness of emotions;
  • vague anxiety;
  • irritability.

The production of dopamine (the hormone of joy) and serotonin decreases, and to compensate for this, the production of adrenaline and cortisol, which are responsible for tension and stress, increases. "And now you are exhausted and anxious at the same time. The metabolic rate decreases, proteins and fats are processed more slowly, and carbohydrates are absorbed worse. Plus a decrease in vitality. And the kilograms start to grow even without an increase in food intake," the nutritionist said.

According to the doctor, with hypothyroidism, the body temperature drops below 36.6 degrees. In the case of fever, we try to drink hot drinks, keep warm under a blanket, and eat something while switching TV channels. In other words, excess weight increases due to the thyroid gland by reducing the overall tone and unhealthy diet.

What to do?

According to the nutritionist, the first thing you need to do is consult an endocrinologist and normalize your diet. The diet should include vegetables, unsweetened fruits, fiber, bran, white fish, lean meats, and cottage cheese. You need buckwheat, oats, seafood and seaweed, figs and dried apricots.

"And drink water! Remember that in the case of hypothyroidism, it takes 3-4 times longer to lose weight than a healthy person. It is important to regain vigor and vitality – start with walks, gradually increase physical activity, and strive for more positive emotions. And then the body will begin to regain its metabolic rate," the nutritionist emphasized.
