Both vegetables have a long shelf life, so people think they can be stored next to each other. But in fact, it is better to avoid this, because onions emit ethylene gas, which contributes to the rapid spoilage of food.

Potatoes should be stored away from onions, garlic, and tomatoes because they release a lot of ethylene gas, a plant growth hormone that helps fruits ripen to taste better. Not only will these vegetables cause the potatoes to start sprouting prematurely, but they also have a high water content, which means they release a lot of moisture and can cause mold to form on the potatoes.

Instead, the best place to store potatoes is in a dark and dry place, such as a cupboard or drawer in the kitchen. This place should be located away from sources of water and heat. That is, keeping vegetables under the sink or near the stove is not a good idea.
