Truth and myths about the benefits of juices: nutritionists comment

The presence of natural and packaged juices in the diet can have a very serious impact on human health.

Nutritionists, whom we asked to explain the importance of juices in the daily diet, told about this in an exclusive commentary to OBOZREVATEL.

Nutritionist Olha Naboka: If a person eats a kilogram of oranges a day, he or she will get pancreatitis

"You can't squeeze 200 ml of juice out of one 200-gram orange. That's why when we eat an orange with fiber, it's very good, we don't put too much stress on the pancreas. But if a person drinks 200 ml of natural juice, this is a much larger amount of carbohydrates, even if it is sugar-free juice. Such carbohydrates are absorbed very quickly, which will lead to rapid weight gain.

Such juices contain a lot of fructose, which is bad for the liver. Given the amount of carbohydrates, such juices have a very bad effect on the pancreas. You don't want to drink 200 ml of juice, but several times 200 ml. If you convert this to fruit, you will get a kilogram of oranges. If a person eats a kilogram of oranges a day, he or she will be guaranteed pancreatitis. I don't buy packaged juices, I don't drink natural juices either, and I don't advise you to do so either."

Nutritionist Serhii Antoniuk: Juice is bad, even if it is natural

"If we have to choose between fresh juice, fruit, and fresh juice, the best thing for our body is to eat fruit, the worst is fresh, and the worst is juice. Juice is bad, even if it is natural. It's all about the speed of carbohydrate absorption. If we eat fresh fruit, then the carbohydrates are sealed with pectin and, accordingly, they are absorbed more slowly. Carbohydrates from fresh fruit will be absorbed faster because the fruit has already been mechanically processed. As for juices, they contain fructose and fast carbohydrates. If the juice has also been heat-treated, it will contain very few vitamins and minerals, but fast carbohydrates will remain."

Nutritionist Olena Yudina: If you want to lose weight and improve your health, remove lemonade and juices from your diet

"Even natural juices are very harmful, which is why I don't drink them. Both juices and fresh juices contain a huge amount of simple carbohydrates. A glass of apple juice contains 50 grams of simple carbohydrates, while the daily intake of these simple carbohydrates for an average woman is 50 grams. If she drinks a glass of this fresh juice, she will have already received her daily intake of simple carbohydrates.

Then she will eat more fruits, vegetables, candy, drink milk, and she will have an overabundance of these simple carbohydrates. Excess simple carbohydrates always turn into fat. In addition, juices should not be consumed by people who have problems with the gastrointestinal tract, i.e. gastritis, enterocolitis, ulcers, etc. The juices are really bad. It's not even worth talking about packaged store-bought juices, as there is nothing useful in these drinks. If you want to lose weight and improve your health, remove lemonade and juices from your diet."

Nutritionist Lyudmila Honcharova: 100 ml of juice contains 4 tablespoons of sugar

"My attitude to natural juice is negative. It is pure sugar. We are not talking about packaged juices at all. 100 ml of juice contains 4 tablespoons of sugar. Is your body ready to absorb this amount of sugar?"
