No black bread and no herring: six common Ukrainian foods you won't find in the U.S.

Many Ukrainians are now abroad. And no matter how much delicious and unusual food they eat there, they still want their native herring with black bread and other delicacies. But, unfortunately, it can be very difficult or impossible to find familiar products.

Sour milk cheese

Traditional sour milk cheese, which we are used to eating with honey or fruit, is not available in America. Therefore, Ukrainians are often looking for different ways to make it from milk or kefir. Americans are used to eating cottage cheese. It has a pronounced salty flavor and is not suitable for cooking the dishes we are used to.

Boiled sausage

Despite the fact that boiled sausage was brought to Ukraine from the United States, you won't find such a product in this country now. In addition, America has many different variants of salami and smoked sausages, ham. All this meat is an integral component of American pizza. And they simply do not know about sandwiches with boiled sausage.

Black bread

Among the wide variety of baguettes, custard and toast bread, you will not find black bread. Most likely, there is simply no need for it there, because we are used to eating this product in a bite with borscht or herring.

Sorrel

Sorrel is considered a truly Ukrainian herb. In America, people are used to adding sourness with other products: lemon, lime, and various herbs. The only ingredient that can be an alternative to sorrel is spinach.

Classic red beetroot

If you can't imagine your diet without traditional Ukrainian borscht, you'll have a hard time in America. This is because you won't find red beets in the United States. And there is no substitute for this unique product.

Herring

In America, you can find many types of red fish, but no herring. People there are simply not used to this product, so there is no need for it.
