Mashed potatoes are one of the most popular side dishes of fall. Properly prepared mashed potatoes are very tasty, tender, have a velvety texture and give a real homey comfort, complementing any main dish.

If you want to learn how to cook mashed potatoes so that they have a creamy texture and lumps are never caught, you should know certain tricks. One of them was shared on TikTok by food blogger Rosemary Gill. As it turns out, you should never boil potatoes for future mashed potatoes in water.

She claims that for years cooks have been preparing mashed potatoes incorrectly, resulting in substandard mush. But, with following this technique, you'll finally know what mashed potatoes should taste like.

Gill states that potatoes for future mashed potatoes should be boiled in milk. Potatoes contain starch, which is released into the water in the same manner as when pasta is boiled. After the potatoes have boiled, the water is drained, and with it all the necessary starch. However, if you boil the potatoes immediately in milk and do not drain them, you can get silky, creamy mashed potatoes. As a result, the milk completely replaces the mashing liquid, which is usually added separately, such as cream.
