How to prevent canning lids from rusting: useful tips
Sometimes it happens that rust begins to form on the lids some time after canning. In most cases, this is due to the dampness of the basement where the jars are kept.
However, this problem can be avoided if you follow simple tips. The FoodOboz editorial team shares some of them.
What to do to prevent lids from rusting
To prevent the dampness of the basement from damaging the lids, you can do the following:
1. Tightly wrap the neck of the jar with cling film or a plastic bag and secure it on top with an ordinary rubber band
2. Wrap the lids with paper that has been soaked in any kind of fat, oil, lard, or petroleum jelly.
3. Dampen a brush or cloth with silicone grease and apply it to the lids. This synthetic oil-based material with silicone elements is completely safe for this use and will protect the lids from corrosion.
4. To prevent rust from ruining the lids on your homemade preservations, lubricate them with regular vegetable oil.
What to do if the lids are already rusted
Rust on lids not only spoils the taste of food but also makes it dangerous for health. This is especially true for compotes and fruit preparations with pits.
Do not eat canned food if the lid is rusted from the inside, is deformed, moldy, or has an unpleasant odor.
