10 products from the USSR that would stump foreigners
For people from Western countries, the Soviet Union was a country from another planet. Households, traditions and products in stores were radically different.
OBOZREVATEL collected 10 products that surprised foreigners in the past - and would surely stun now. There was not canned water, did not drink birch juice and did not make "caviar" from zucchini.
Canned water
In the USSR, the navy issued canned drinking water in case of an emergency because sea water was unfit for drinking. The shelf life of the product was 4 years.
Hematogen
Hematogen candies that increase hemoglobin were invented for soldiers. Deliciousness in the USSR was later given to children.
"Caviar" from zucchini
In the USSR, zucchini and eggplant caviar was in demand, it was on the shelf of every store. It was impossible to find it abroad, unless someone brought it as a gift.
Tea in the form of a brick
The USSR produced tea in pressed form with different flavors.
Doctor's sausage
Boiled sausage in the Soviet Union was called doctor's sausage because it was given to patients who were prescribed a diet - it had a minimum percentage of fat.
"Fresh" seafood.
Ocean sea paste was made from processed shrimp and crayfish. Fresh seafood was sold almost nowhere in the USSR.

In the Soviet Union, sap was extracted from the trunks of birch trees and sold in every store.
