It would seem that what could be dangerous in one single glass of wine a day? In general, nothing. But over time, this harmless habit can have quite bad health consequences.

The journalists of Eat This, Not That! talked to scientists from various scientific organizations and compiled a list of side effects that the "drink of the gods" causes to our body.

  • Alcoholic fatty liver disease. ALD threatens those who regularly drink more than one glass of wine a day. Women and obese people are in the high-risk group. The insidiousness of this disease is that it is usually asymptomatic: in the early stages, ALD can manifest itself only with fatigue and infrequent pain in the upper right abdomen.
  • Liver cirrhosis. Doctors say that cirrhosis develops in people who have been abusing alcohol for at least 10 years. According to studies, the risk of cirrhosis is especially high among women aged 25 to 34 who drink alcohol daily.
  • Depression. Regular consumption of large amounts of alcohol can increase the risk of depression. This applies not only to wine but also to beer and spirits. However, scientists also note that a moderate dose of alcohol (no more than a glass of wine a day) relieves anxiety and reduces the risk of depression.
  • Weight gain. Nutritionists claim that red wine in moderation is good for health. However, they note that 150 ml of red wine contains about 125 calories. This means that by drinking two glasses of wine every day, you increase your diet by 1750 calories every week.
  • Development of heart disease. Once again, it doesn't matter what kind of alcohol you drink: wine, beer, or some kind of spirits, if you do it every day, it increases the risk of premature death from heart attacks and other heart diseases.

Scientists warn that a glass of red wine in the evening will not harm you, but if you cannot control the amount of alcohol, if you have a habit of drinking every night, you should get rid of this harmful hobby once and for all.
