What to replace mayonnaise in Shuba salad with
Shuba, or herring under a fur coat, is an old classic salad that became very popular in Soviet times. It has been around for decades and still retains its position - it is prepared in almost every home for any feast. However, it's worth noting that harmful mayonnaise and low-quality canned food are not always a good combination. Thus, if you really don't want to change traditions, you can replace the usual ingredients in the fur coat with healthier ones.
The FoodOboz editorial team will tell you how to replace the ingredients in the coat and share dressing options for the popular salad.
How to "update" herring under a fur coat?
Playing with ingredients
You can try adding a fresh, unsweetened apple or pickled or fresh cucumber to a traditional salad. The fur coat will also get a special flavor if you add some green peas, sauerkraut, and Korean-style carrots instead of regular ones. By the way, for those who don't know, there is a separate version of cooking vegetarian herring under a fur coat, where seaweed is used instead of fish.
Pickling onions in advance
This product will especially appeal to those who have always removed onions from the salad. Thus, we suggest marinating it in advance. This is the only way to give it a spicy sweet and sour flavor and make the salad even more delicious and refined. To marinate onions properly, cut them into small cubes, then pour water over and add just a little lemon juice. You can add salt and pepper to taste.
Replacing mayonnaise
If you are suddenly surprised after reading this paragraph and do not understand how you can eat your favorite salad without mayonnaise, we have found an equally good alternative for you. Yes, you can replace store-bought mayonnaise with plain sour cream, a versatile sauce and dressing for many salads. And if you really don't want to deviate from the classics, make homemade mayonnaise, which is many times tastier and in no way inferior to store-bought one.
