Useless cooking habits we've adopted from our parents: top 5
Washing vegetables, cooking food under a closed lid, marinating meat for a day: these are not all the strange kitchen habits that each of us follows, considering them correct. But you don't have to do all of this, especially since some of them are absolutely pointless and, on the contrary, only complicate the cooking process and even spoil the food.
The FoodOboz editorial team has compiled a list of bad cooking habits that we picked up from our parents.
1. Washing vegetables, herbs, berries and fruits quickly
If you want to eat truly safe foods, namely store-bought vegetables, berries, and fruits, washing them for 1 minute under running water is not enough. You need to soak them in cold water for at least 20 minutes to get rid of nitrates.
2. Cooking compotes
Fruits and berries that end up in compote lose absolutely all their beneficial properties when exposed to high temperatures, so compote is not a healthy drink. It is best to eat fruits and berries raw.
3. Not defrosting meat in the refrigerator
Meat is a product that must be properly thawed on the bottom shelf in the refrigerator, not in the sink or, even worse, in boiling water. In this way, meat loses its beneficial properties and its structure is disrupted if it is thawed incorrectly.
4. Baking fish with lemon
Cooks advise not to put lemon inside the fish but to serve it with the cooked fish so that it does not give it a bitter taste.
5. Marinating meat around the clock
To make barbecue meat soft, juicy, and tasty, it doesn't need to be marinated for a day. Culinary experts also advise avoiding mayonnaise, vinegar, and a lot of spices when making the marinade. Depending on the type of meat, you can marinate it for as little as 30 minutes.
