Since childhood, most people have associated legumes only with peas and beans, which could hardly be called a favorite food. Even though today, many types of legumes can be purchased at every corner, they still remain rare guests in the diet. Usually, this is due to the fact that some people feel uncomfortable after eating them. And this does not mean that you should give up legumes altogether.

Nutritionist Marina Kalinina suggested remedying the situation on her Instagram page, where she talked about how to train yourself to eat more legumes and how to combine them properly.

The benefits of legumes

Why should you eat at least one spoonful of legumes a day?

  • Optimal glycemic index – glucose enters the bloodstream more slowly and prevents a sharp rise in insulin and sugar.
  • Intake of complex carbohydrates – the body is saturated with energy, satisfies hunger and further appetite decreases.
  • Adaptation of the gastrointestinal tract and immunity boost.

Recommendations for choosing legumes and including them in your diet:

  1. When choosing pulses, look for bright and varied options: lentils, mung beans, or chickpeas – there are many varieties unless you just like peas.
  2. Don't eat too many legumes at the beginning – get your body used to them gradually. After the first serving, monitor your body's reaction for 36 hours. If the product does not work for you, try another one and monitor the reaction in the same way.
  3. All legumes should be soaked before consumption, as they contain a lot of aggressive components (saponins, phytates).
  4. Do not eat legumes with any cabbage, asparagus, garlic, onions, and mushrooms.
  5. After eating legumes, limit the consumption of sweets for at least 3 hours.
  6. Do not serve legumes with poultry dishes because of the double protein load.
  7. It is best to combine legumes with fennel and dill. This eliminates gas formation.
