The history of the sandwich: why the dish appeared in gambling
A sandwich is a versatile dish where you can combine your favorite foods. It is very satisfying and easy to prepare. It is a perfect snack or breakfast. Like every dish, the sandwich has its own special origin story.
Today, FoodOboz editorial team will tell you who invented the sandwich and why its appearance is related to gambling.
The sandwich owes its appearance to the Englishman John Montague, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Back in the early eighteenth century, in 1718, a ten-year-old boy John Montague became the fourth Earl of Sandwich after his grandfather's death, and later the most famous representative of his family.
He was a member of the English Parliament and the Minister of the Navy.
The Earl was always interested in sea voyages, and he actively assisted Captain James Cook. When Cook discovered a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean in 1778, he even named them the Sandwich Islands (later these islands became known as Hawaii).
John Montague was an avid card player. Once, in 1762, the game lasted for a whole day. Since it was difficult to play cards and eat at the table with a knife and fork at the same time, the earl asked the cook to serve him two pieces of fried bread with a slice of roast beef (an English dish that is a large piece of beef baked in the oven) between them. This way he could hold the cards with one hand and eat with the other. His companions, seeing that it was a great idea, started ordering "the same as Sandwich!" That's how the name stuck.

Tomato - 2 pcs.
Toasted bread -12 slices
Dutch cheese - 150 g
Method of preparation:
- Rinse the chicken breast, and then put it on the grill to bake until the meat is fully cooked.
- While the meat is cooking, you can make the sauce. Put sugar, ketchup, Tabasco sauce, mustard, and apple juice, and squeeze the juice from two oranges into a small saucepan.
- Put the mixture on the stove and cook for 15 minutes over medium heat, stirring constantly. The sauce should be reduced in volume by about three times.
- Then prepare the mustard sauce. Sprinkle the egg yolks with pepper, and salt, pour in the wine, lemon juice, and whisk.
- The mixture should be put in a water bath, and as soon as it starts to foam, pour in the previously melted butter and stir.
- Finally, add one and a half tablespoons of mustard, and when the mass thickens well, it means that the sauce is ready.
- Cut the cooked chicken breast into pieces, then pour over the previously prepared barbecue sauce and mix.
- Cut the pork neck into thin slices, season with salt and pepper, and drizzle with olive oil. Then put it on the grill and fry for 3 minutes.
- Cut the tomatoes into slices. Put the bread on the grill and toast until it becomes crusty.
- Put a leaf of lettuce on the toast, put the chicken, pour the barbecue sauce, put a tomato, and cover with a second toast.
- Spread the mustard sauce on top of the toast, put pork, 2 slices of cheese, and a lettuce leaf. Add barbecue sauce, and a little more cheese, and cover with the third toast.
