Svitlana Fus named 12 foods that are the best natural antioxidants
Our health depends entirely on what we eat and how we eat it. Nutritionists advise choosing healthy foods that are rich in vitamins and essential trace elements rather than tasty ones. In addition, we should not forget that there are foods that are valuable natural antioxidants.
Nutritionist Svitlana Fus shared on her Facebook page what foods are natural antioxidants and how to eat them properly.
Natural antioxidants
It is worth noting that these are primarily β-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and lycopene (in tomatoes).
They also include polyphenols:
- flavin and flavonoids (often found in vegetables)
- tannins (in cocoa, coffee, tea)
- anthocyanins (in red berries)
The composition of antioxidants in foods is expressed in ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), this unit shows the degree of antioxidant activity (the ability to inhibit the action of free radicals).
Fuss noted that all fruits and vegetables are a rich source of antioxidants.
"Most of them are found in onions, garlic, kale, spinach, beans, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, beets, as well as apples, grapes, chokecherries, blackberries, citrus fruits, kiwi, strawberries, as well as nuts and spices such as turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, caraway seeds, and cocoa," the nutritionist said.
The nutritionist also added that you should eat about 400-500 g of vegetables and fruits every day.
"I would also say that although there are no official standards for antioxidant consumption, add as many antioxidant foods to your menu as possible. It should be at least 400-500 g of vegetables, fruits, and berries a day!" said Svitlana Fus.
