French fries are deadly to health. This conclusion was reached by American scientists in a large-scale study.

The experiment involved almost 4500 people of legal age, Eat This, Not That! reports. The study found that eating French fries more than twice a week doubles the risk of premature death. Eating deep-fried potatoes three times a week increases the risk of a heart attack by 7%.

Scientists explain this trend by the fact that the side dish is cooked in a huge amount of oil, which is usually changed very rarely, which is why carcinogens are formed there. In addition, the oil contains a huge amount of trans fats, which increase the level of "bad" cholesterol. It, in turn, settles on the walls of blood vessels, makes them less elastic, and also causes the development of cardiovascular diseases, such as stroke or heart attack.

Experts also note that high levels of trans fats in the body affect the development of dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and other brain-related diseases.

Scientists also remind that this side dish takes a very long time to digest and can cause bloating, pain, and even cramps due to a disruption of the intestinal microbiome.
