Prediabetes: a doctor tells how to get rid of carbohydrate addiction

With a properly formulated diet, you can get rid of carbohydrate addiction and help yourself with prediabetes without metformin.

Nutritionist Svitlana Skosar announced this on her Facebook page.

She noted that carbohydrates are an essential part of a healthy diet, their amount should be 45-60% of the total energy per day. But of this amount, only 5-10% are simple carbohydrates.

"As practice shows, what people call carbohydrate addiction signals that the diet lacks something, such as protein or some other macro- or microelements," Skosar emphasized, reminding that it may be worth revising your diet to a better quality.

According to the doctor, in case of prediabetes, it is necessary to reduce weight by 5-10% of the initial weight. In other words, if a person weighs 100 kg, it is enough to lose 5-10 kg to reduce the risk.

The nutritionist also noted that it is necessary to replace numerous snacks with at least two, and preferably three or four full meals. One or two more snacks are allowed in between so that there are no strict prohibitions.

"What are full meals? A complete meal consists of protein (meat, fish, eggs, cheese, nuts, soybeans, legumes, etc.), carbohydrates (cereals, grains, bread, legumes, vegetables, fruits, potatoes, etc.), fats, mainly unsaturated: oily fish, nuts, seeds, flax seeds, olives, olives, olive oil, linseed oil, etc.", the doctor emphasized.

The nutritionist also emphasized the importance of physical activity, reminding that the main problem with diabetes is that cells become insensitive to insulin, and blood sugar rises.

"Choose any pleasant and medically possible ways of physical activity: walking, swimming, exercising, yoga, dancing," Skosar said, emphasizing that the recommendations are for informational purposes only and do not replace a doctor's consultation.
