Is microwave food safe: experts dispel myths
The opinions of specialists and experts on the dangers and safety of microwaves vary greatly. Some argue that food after it not only loses all its beneficial properties but also becomes dangerous. On the contrary, some recommend using a microwave oven, calling it an absolutely safe and practical kitchen appliance.
The FoodOboz editorial team has selected for you reliable information published on the official Facebook page of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine regarding the safety of using microwave ovens, as well as the principle of their operation and effect on food.
How a microwave oven works
During operation, radio waves (frequency 2.450 GHz) are generated inside the appliance, which move water/sugar/fat molecules, causing the food to heat up.
Like any electrical appliance, a microwave oven emits microwaves. In essence, it is similar to the radiation from light bulbs or a radio, i.e. it is absolutely safe for life and health. Moreover, a metal box inside the oven and a metal mesh on the door additionally protect against microwaves escaping outside the appliance.
Is food heated in a microwave safe?
Food heated in a microwave oven is just as safe as food prepared by more conventional methods: frying, boiling, and baking. There is no difference in nutritional value.
The main difference is that due to the high permeability of microwaves, the heating of food is accelerated.
There may be questions about the safety of food after heating in a microwave oven. For example, it is alleged that food can be radioactive after the oven.
But radioactive radiation and electromagnetic radiation are two different things. Radioactive radiation is the release of elementary particles by atomic nuclei during their fission, and the term "radiation" refers to ionizing radiation (alpha, beta, and gamma rays). It is this type of radiation that has a destructive effect on biological tissues.
In turn, the electromagnetic waves of the microwave oven pass through the food and then go out. They do not accumulate in the food, leave particles on it, or destroy the structure. Therefore, food after microwave cooking is free of radioactive particles.
Experts say that it is still not necessary to heat food in plastic containers that are not intended for use in a microwave oven, as this can be dangerous.
