How to properly store cabbage until spring to keep it crisp: basic rules
Cabbage is one of the most popular vegetables that housewives grow in large quantities in their gardens. That's why it's important to know how and where to store it at home to keep it fresh and crisp until spring.
The FoodOboz editorial team has gathered information for you and will tell you how to store cabbage in the basement and your apartment.
How to store cabbage in the cellar and basement
1. Pallets and boxes
To use this method, you need to clean the cabbage from excess leaves and put it in a box/pallet with the head down. In this case, ventilation plays an important role, so the bottom of the box or pallet should have holes. Be sure to put small blocks between the bottom and the ground to form the so-called "legs". And, of course, don't forget to periodically check on the cabbage to make sure everything is okay.
2. Racking
This method is very similar to the previous one. All you need to do is prepare the cabbage and place it on the rack with the head of cabbage facing down. Just remember to pre-dry the wooden slats of the rack and periodically check the cabbage for rot.
In addition, not only the storage method is important, but also the proximity of cabbage to other vegetables. For example, potatoes, beets, and carrots are good neighbors for cabbage in the basement.
How to store cabbage in an apartment
1. A plastic bag
First, you need to cut off the head of cabbage and remove the excess leaves. Make holes in the bag for ventilation and put the cabbage in it. Don't forget to check periodically to see if the cabbage is okay.
2. Cling film
Even though this method is quite new, it is no less effective. To do this, remove the excess leaves from the cabbage and leave the head of cabbage as long as possible. Then wrap the cabbage with cling film in 3-4 layers, leaving the head of the cabbage "free". You can store cabbage in this way both in the refrigerator and on shelves or in boxes.
3. The balcony
Before proceeding with the method, make sure your balcony is well insulated because winter frosts accelerate the rotting of cabbage. After that, everything is very simple: you need to find a container and put the cabbage in it. Vegetables can be wrapped in plastic wrap or parchment. It is advisable to check once a month to see if everything is okay.
