How to eat cheese: an expert explains
Cheese is considered one of the world's favorite foods. Some people are ready to eat it at all meals and even as a snack. And when guests come over, hostesses try to put all kinds of cheese on the plate and more. But is it right and how is it appropriate to eat cheese?
The FoodOboz editorial team will tell you how to eat cheese correctly, based on the advice of a cheese expert. Published on Instagram.
General rules
- Eating cheese right away is bad form. First, you need to enjoy the external aesthetics, and only then savor each piece.
- Cheese slices should stand for about 10 minutes. It is believed that this is the only way for the taste and flavor to fully grow.
As for goat cheeses, they have a special etiquette. A cheese plate with them should stand for 30 to 60 minutes. It is at this time that a "cheese tear" should appear – moisture that indicates the high quality of the cheese. Cheesemakers are said to have even come up with their own saying about this: "Cheese cries – cheese maker rejoices".
The more the merrier: or how many types of cheese to put on a plate
Usually, a wide variety of cheeses are served on a cheese plate: young and mature, hard and soft, savory, delicate and neutral. There are many opinions about this. Some say that you should put no more than three types, others – eleven. But there is a universal rule to follow: the number of varieties should be odd, and the number of pieces should be so large that each guest can taste each type. At the same time, all the cheese on the plate should be eaten.
How to cut cheese correctly
Cheese can be cut into slices, cubes, or coarse pieces. It's important to remember that each type of cheese should have a clean knife and board to prevent flavors from mixing.
- Soft cheeses with mold are best cut into triangles.
- Mozzarella and similar types should be served either whole or cut into slices.
- Hard cheeses – in cubes or slices.
- Semi-hard cheeses – in slices, which are then wrapped in a tube.
What thickness of cheese brings out the best flavor
English scientists know everything and have even conducted an experiment. As a result, it was proved that slices with a thickness of 2.5 to 7 mm reveal the taste of cheese best.
