How to choose delicious and quality lard: 4 main secrets
Every Ukrainian like lard with garlic and borscht. Of course, it's hard to find one who does not. In addition, it is a very healthy, nutritious product, as it contains two fatty acids - linoleic and arachidonic - which are extremely important for the brain. You can also cook many delicious dishes with it, such as cutlets, kebabs, baked potatoes, and even desserts.
Today, the FoodOboz editorial team shares with you useful tips for choosing lard in markets and stores.
What to look for when choosing lard:
1. Color
It should be pinkish-white; if the lard has a yellow or gray tint, it means that the product is old or spoiled.
It is also better not to take lard with a reddish tint; its taste will be good, but worse than pink.
2. Smell
It should be very fresh, pleasant, and even slightly milky. This will mean that the product is good and can be safely eaten. If you smell any other odor, it is better to refuse such a product.
The skin may have a smoky odor - this is normal. Be sure to check that it is thin, clean and without bristles.
3. Structure
Good lard should be soft, often with meat layers. It should not be dry and weathered.
4. Marinade
It is better not to buy already marinated lard, as spices often "clog" the spoiled product and make it extremely dangerous. You can marinate it yourself at home to be completely sure of its safety.
