Greek salad: history and the most correct recipe for a delicious dish
One of the simplest, healthiest, and most budget-friendly salads is Greek. It is based on fresh vegetables: tomatoes, cucumbers, feta or goat cheese, oil, olives, and dried herbs. But this salad is often accompanied by breadcrumbs and other sauces that can spoil the taste of the dish.
The FoodOboz editorial team has collected interesting facts about Greek salad and an original recipe for a delicious dish that you can prepare at home very quickly.
To begin with, there is no official history of the origin of this dish, but there are several unofficial versions.
According to one of them, the Greek salad originated in the 20s and 30s of the 19th century, which coincides with the beginning of tomato cultivation in Greece.
According to the second version, in 1909, a Greek immigrant who loved vegetables, olives, and spices simply cut up tomatoes, cheese, and onions and combined them in a bowl to make a delicious dish.
But there is a third version of the dish's origin, and it is more realistic: in Greece, with the beginning of the development of foreign tourism more than half a century ago, taverns began to receive a significant number of guests. At that moment, it was necessary to come up with a universal dish that would be easy to prepare and very simple and tasty, and that's how the salad appeared. Then, as now, the main ingredients of the dish were salted feta, olive oil, fresh vegetables, ripe olives, oregano seasoning, and herbs.
