An extra serving of fruit or vegetables a day significantly reduces the risk of developing diabetes.
According to the Daily Mail, a study conducted by the University of Cambridge found that increasing fruit and vegetable consumption by one small daily portion reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by 25%.
In the UK, a portion of fruit or vegetables is defined as 80 g - the equivalent of three tablespoons of boiled carrots, two pieces of broccoli or a small apple.
Another study conducted at Harvard showed that eating whole grains also prevents diabetes.
Harvard Medical School estimates that one meal a day of whole grain breakfast cereal, such as porridge or dry biscuits, will reduce the risk of diabetes by 19%.
