Coffee: harm or good. Nutritionists have not come to an agreement

At the moment, we can say that drinking coffee has both positive and negative consequences for our body.

Nutritionists told OBOZREVATEL about this in exclusive comments to nutritionists whom we asked about what is more beneficial or harmful in coffee.

Coffee: harm or good. Nutritionists have not come to an agreement

Nutritionist Olha Naboka: It is safe to drink up to two cups of coffee a day, no more

"Coffee has pros and cons. The benefit is that coffee speeds up the metabolic process. This is good because it helps to grow muscle mass. When it comes to the liver, a lot depends on the type of coffee. If we are talking about instant coffee, it has no benefit. If it's natural coffee, then yes, but only if it's Arabica. This particular variety has an antioxidant effect, which is good for the liver, among other things. It is safe to drink up to two cups of coffee a day, no more. Strict contraindications are pancreatitis, diabetes, hypertension, kidney stones, gallstones, musculoskeletal problems, osteoporosis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer."

Nutritionist Serhii Antoniuk: We can safely say that coffee is a healthy drink

"Coffee is a healthy drink, but it is not a hepatoprotector. The fact that coffee is good for the liver is a myth. Otherwise, coffee is very good. Caffeine itself has no stimulating effect on the central nervous system. It only temporarily binds the inhibitory effect of the neurotransmitter. That's why we feel a surge of energy after drinking a cup of coffee.

In addition, caffeine increases the contractility of the myocardium and increases the rate of release of fatty acids during exercise. Caffeine also reduces blood clotting, activates tissue oxidation processes, enhances concentration, improves mood, and slows down the onset of fatigue.

Moreover, caffeine actively promotes the breakdown of glycogen. Let me remind you that glycogen is synthesized and stored as a carbohydrate reserve in the liver and in small amounts in the muscles. When energy is consumed, its reserves decrease, and the amount of glucose synthesized from glycogen increases, and the range of fluctuations in blood glucose levels is maintained within acceptable limits. Therefore, we can safely say that coffee is a healthy drink."

Nutritionist Olena Yudina: The safe limit is 300 ml of coffee per day, i.e. two servings of espresso, no more

"From the point of view of Vedic dietetics, coffee is bad, but from the point of view of evidence-based medicine, coffee is normal. But it is better not to drink coffee with milk. Coffee has a different effect on each person. For some people, coffee is an invigorating drink, while for others, coffee makes their heartbeat quicken and they become anxious. This is all purely individual. There is nothing wrong with coffee, as long as we do not exceed the norm. The safe limit is 300 ml of coffee per day, which is two servings of espresso, no more. But you need to remember that coffee is not advisable to drink, first of all, for heart patients and hypertensives."

Nutritionist Lyudmila Honcharova: Coffee is definitely a harmful drink

"Coffee removes calcium and magnesium from our body. These are two minerals that control our muscular system and its functioning. Essentially, the work of our muscular system is to contract and relax. Coffee excreted calcium and magnesium into bile, the muscle system contracted, and we went to the toilet and lost our calcium and magnesium reserves. But whether we will restore this reserve during the day is another question. So coffee is definitely a harmful drink."
