Can children eat sauerkraut: what experts say

Sauerkraut is considered a very healthy fermented product that experts advise eating in winter. But when it comes to the consumption of this product by young children, there are a number of peculiarities.

On her Instagram page, children's nutritionist Victoria with the nickname valeriia_prokids.nutrition told us whether sauerkraut is good for children and at what age it is better to introduce it.

According to the expert, cabbage is traditionally fermented with carrots, salt, and spices. Although this recipe is the most optimal for children, the main drawback of the dish is the large amount of salt.

For children from 6 to 12 months, sauerkraut should be introduced gradually in small amounts and pre-soaked in water to minimize the amount of salt. At the same time, you should not offer children anything else that may also contain salt like bread, cheese, canned food, etc. on this day.

For children from 1 year, it is still advisable to soak cabbage before eating, but the amount of the dish itself can be increased. It is also possible not to soak cabbage, but in this case it will act as a spice or an addition to other dishes.

As for the other components of sauerkraut:

  • sugar is allowed from the age of 2.
  • vinegar is allowed but in very small quantities.
  • there is no special prohibition for spices, but it is better to give them from 1-2 years old.
