Herring is a very healthy, tasty, and affordable fish that everyone can and should eat because it contains a lot of essential vitamins and minerals. Most importantly, the fish contains healthy omega-3 fatty acids. It is worth noting that it can be eaten in any form, made into salads, pickled, salted, and used to make delicious forshmak and pates. Experts recommend eating it for everyone, even children.

Victoria Stelmakh, founder of the largest Ukrainian-language Facebook group on complementary foods and baby food expert, told FoodOboz exclusively from what age and in what form herring can be given to children.

From what age is herring safe for children

"If we're talking about herring as raw fish that you plan to heat and cook completely, then it can be given from 6 months, but I remind you that each type of fish is a separate allergen," Victoria explained.

"But if you're wondering when you can offer your child salted/lightly salted herring, you'll have to wait until your child is 5 years old. According to all international recommendations, it is forbidden to give children raw or semi-raw foods until they are 5 years old. All this is because of the high risk of salmonella, helminthiasis, listeria, and other diseases," says Victoria.

"Such products also include red and black caviar, lightly salted, dried and smoked fish (including red, herring, etc.)," the expert summarized.

Such products can be consumed only after complete 100% heat treatment.
