A product that can protect against cancer by 45% is named
Daily consumption of mushrooms can protect the human body from various types of cancer by 45%.
Scientists at Pennsylvania State Cancer Institute analyzed data from more than 19,500 patients and studied the relation between mushroom consumption and cancer risk. Results have shown that people who ate mushrooms every day had a lower risk of developing cancer compared to those who did not, reports News.psu.edu.
Epidemiology graduate student Djibril M. Ba said that mushrooms are a major dietary source of ergothioneine, which is a unique and powerful antioxidant and cell protector.
"Replenishing antioxidants in the body may help protect against oxidative stress and lower the risk of cancer,"Djibrilsaid.
When specific cancers were studied, the researchers noted a strong link to breast cancer, as people who regularly ate mushrooms had a significantly lower risk.
This could be due to the fact that most studies did not include other forms of cancer. In the future, this study may be useful for further exploring the protective effects that mushrooms have and for creating healthier diets that prevent cancer.
"Overall, these findings provide important evidence for the protective effects of mushrooms against cancer," said co-author John Richie, a researcher at the Cancer Institute.
