A nutritionist advised to eat an onion a day and told about the benefits
Eating one onion a day will benefit the body. And you can eat onions in any form – both raw and cooked.
This is the opinion of nutritionist Svitlana Fus. On her Instagram page, she wrote that onions are an excellent means of preventing many diseases.
The expert said that onions are used during colds to relieve sore throats. In addition, onions help to lower blood cholesterol and prevent atherosclerosis. They also increase appetite, promote the production of digestive juices and bile, and stimulate the intestines. Thus, onions have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, strengthen capillaries, and boost immunity.
At the same time, Svitlana notes that raw onions are not recommended for people with gastrointestinal diseases (gastritis, stomach ulcers), as they can irritate the mucous membranes.
"A side effect of eating onions is an unpleasant odor on the skin and breath, but in moderate amounts it shouldn't be a big problem, and the health benefits are quite noticeable," says Svitlana.
A list of the most important substances contained in onions: ⠀
- Quercetin. A substance from the flavonoid family with strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
- Anthocyanins. A subgroup of flavonoids (antioxidants) that give some types of onions their purple or red color. The more flavonoids, the brighter and darker the color of the bulb. Therefore, ordinary yellow onions are good, but purple ones are even better.
- Organic sulfur compounds, such as allicin. It gives a pungent odor and taste and has antibacterial and antifungal effects.
- Fructans. Fructose polymers that are not digested by our enzymes become a breeding ground for beneficial intestinal microflora (especially bifidus and lactobacilli).
- Saponins. Plant glycosides. They have anti-constipation properties and lower cholesterol. These substances make onions an important medicinal plant. ⠀
