Most people use microwaves incorrectly, which makes food taste bad, to put it mildly.

To avoid misunderstandings, Insider magazine surveyed American chefs and compiled a list of the most common mistakes we make when cooking and reheating food in the microwave.

  • The first and most common mistake you make is when you heat several types of food at the same time. In this case, the heating is uneven: some of the food turns out to be very hot while others remain cold.
  • The second mistake we make is when we forget to stir the contents of the plate or turn the food during the heating process. In this case, the dish also heats up unevenly.
  • The third mistake is that many people heat liquid in glassware. Do not do this, as it can cause burns. In addition, chefs say that water needs to come into contact with an uneven surface to boil, and smooth glass interferes with this process.
  • The fourth mistake is to use unsuitable dishes in the microwave oven. For example, polystyrene foam bowls are not designed for microwaves: when heated, polystyrene releases harmful chemical elements, particles of which get into our food.
  • The fifth mistake people make is when they turn on an empty microwave. Such manipulations can not only damage the microwave but also cause a fire.
  • The sixth mistake you'll make is if you cook hot peppers in the microwave. When heated, chili and jalapenos emit harmful steam and the smoke coming from the pepper can burn your eyes. In addition, in a microwave oven, peppers begin to release capsaicin, a substance that can cause irritation when in contact with moist tissues of the eyes, nose, and throat. To avoid such situations, chefs recommend cooking hot peppers in the oven, not in the microwave.
  • The seventh mistake is that some people defrost frozen fruits and berries in the microwave. This will not end well, moreover, it will only lead to "a huge mess inside your microwave". If you don't have time to wait for the fruit and berries to thaw at room temperature, put the required amount in a plastic bag and put it in a bowl of hot water.
  • The eighth mistake is made by people who want to boil eggs in the microwave. The fact is that microwaves cook the product from the inside, which means that the egg can simply explode. Even if this does not happen, the egg will have a disgusting taste, writes Insider. If you don't have time to boil an egg in the usual way in a pot on the stove, try making a small hole in the shell and dipping the egg into a ceramic bowl of hot water. Then put the bowl in the microwave at 50% power and cook for about three to four minutes.
