5 types of foods that should not be eaten raw
The Chinese have compiled a list of foods that should be heat-treated: this will destroy harmful bacteria and help avoid digestive problems.
This is stated in an article by the Chinese website Sohu. According to the publication, at least five categories of food should not be consumed raw.
- Raw meat must be blanched before consumption to rid the meat of both bacteria and blood (obviously, veal tartare and Rare and Medium Rare steaks are not respected in China).
- Pickled and dried foods are also advised to be dipped in boiling water before eating. This is necessary to reduce the amount of salt in the food and lower the level of nitrite.
- Asparagus, green beans, and common beans are also recommended to be doused in boiling water before eating. According to the Chinese, such manipulations will help avoid digestive problems.
- Foods with a high content of oxalic acid are also advised to be blanched without fail: the article mentions such foods as bitter pumpkin, spinach, young bamboo shoots, and young ciconia sprouts (a type of rice). According to the author, heat treatment of these foods will help to avoid digestive problems.
- Broccoli and cauliflower, as well as other vegetables that are difficult to peel, are also recommended to be boiled before eating. According to the publication, small insects may live in such products, or traces of pesticides may remain.
