5 most terrible Soviet dishes that were cooked in all canteens
Soviet canteens were an important part of everyday life at that time. Even today, many dishes from the Soviet menu are cooked at home and even in restaurants.
The FoodOboz editorial team has compiled a list of the 5 most terrible dishes that all Soviet canteens had and that are still being prepared today.
It is worth noting that the first canteens appeared in the late 20s. It was a great option for people who didn't want to bring food to work with them.
You could safely have breakfast and lunch in such canteens, but not dinner, as the halls were closed in the evening and alcohol was never sold there, unlike in restaurants.
It is from the USSR that we all know the three-course meal.
The first courses were borsch, kharcho, hodgepodge, pickle, pea soup, cabbage soup , fish and milk soups. They were not always tasty, but rather the opposite.
For the second course: goulash, cutlets or schnitzel with meat gravy, patties, meatballs. These dishes were made from very little meat, and mostly from bread.
Salads: Vitamin salad, vinaigrette.
Mashed potatoes, boiled rice, pasta, and stewed cabbage were served as a side dish. A very popular dish was navy style pasta.
Popular and not tasty dishes:
1. Milk soup
This soup was often served in canteens and given to children in kindergartens. Its taste has been debated before, with some people categorically disliking it, while others liked it.
But even it can be cooked deliciously if done right:
You will need: 1 liter of milk, 50 g of noodles, 1 tbsp of butter, and 1 tsp of sugar.
Bring the milk to a boil, add salt and sugar, add the vermicelli and cook it until tender, then add the butter.
2. Cutlets
As a rule, they were almost always tasteless, since there was almost no meat, and if there was, it was not fresh, then a lot of garlic was added to the cutlets to "kill" the smell. The dish had a lot of bread instead of meat, as well as onions. The price of such delicious food was 11 kopecks per piece.
3. Fish with marinade
Every Thursday, all Soviet canteens had a fish day, and the hit dish was fish in marinade. It was very simple to prepare: the fish was cut into pieces, fried, and vegetables, such as onions and carrots, were cut into strips, fried in a large amount of oil, and tomato paste was added. The food was extremely terrible, greasy, and had a bad odor.
4. Mashed potatoes
This dish was not made with butter or sour cream, but just water. This made it liquid, tasteless, and watery. The same was done with vegetable stew.
5. Sprat in a tomato without heads
It was added to various dishes, which made them terrible and tasteless. For example, they often boiled potatoes and added this terrible canned food to them, salted them, and served them.
