Watermelons will be very large and sweet: the ideal place for them in the garden has been named

Contrary to popular belief that watermelons grow well only in the south, you can grow a good harvest of this plant anywhere in Ukraine. One of the main conditions is to find the right place for a garden bed.

OBOZ.UA asked experienced gardeners how to choose such a place. Here is what they advise those who want to harvest juicy fruits from their garden.

Soil

Watermelons grow best on light and loose soils, such as sandy and sandy loam. Therefore, choose this type of soil for your garden or dig up a spot with clean river sand. The part of the garden chosen for watermelons should be well-lit by the sun. Choose a piece of land that is not shaded during the day.

Also, do not forget to add complex fertilizers to the soil before planting watermelons. They should contain three key elements – nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Without them, you won't be able to grow large and juicy watermelons.

Watering

To get juicy fruits, it is important to take care of proper watering of watermelons. They need a lot of water. Especially in the early stages of development. Water the bed in the morning or evening to prevent the sun from burning the leaves through the water droplets. Also, pay special attention to moistening the soil during drought. Lack of liquid has a major impact on watermelon yields. After the watermelon has bloomed and set, reduce the amount of water slightly if you don't want a watery and unsweetened harvest. And a week before you cut the fruit, stop watering altogether.

Care

The soil in the watermelon bed needs regular loosening. Also, the plant, especially a young one, can easily be clogged with weeds, so they need to be removed regularly. And don't forget about mulch, which will help retain more moisture in the soil and provide a more comfortable temperature regime for the roots of the plant.
