Cherry is a popular fruit crop grown in many orchards. It is quite unpretentious, but to get an abundant harvest of juicy berries, the trees need to be properly fertilized.

Fruit trees are massively fertilized in the fall. However, the Barra publication said that those who want to maximize the yield cannot do without spring feeding.

Feeding cherry trees in the spring allows them to fully develop and grow after hibernation.

When to feed cherries?

The first spring feeding should take place before flowering.

The second fertilization can be applied when the cherry tree begins to bloom, and the third 2 weeks after flowering.

How to fertilize cherries?

You can fertilize cherry trees in the spring with mineral complex compounds and organic fertilizers. All of them will help the culture recover after winter, start active vegetation, and contribute to abundant flowering and fruiting.

The main thing when choosing complex fertilizers is to keep in mind that cherry trees need: iron, manganese, sulfur, nitrogen, copper, boron, urea (urea), potassium salt, potassium, phosphorus, and superphosphate.

Young tree

Young cherry trees, aged from 1 to 3 years, do not need active fertilization, as they receive trace elements that were introduced during planting. But they need to receive enough nitrogenous substances so that they can take root well and grow.

For example, in the second year after the tree has grown, 120 grams of nitrogen fertilizer is applied around the trunk and 10 cm of soil is covered with it.

You can also feed the cherry 2-3 times with urea during May.

Adult trees

For adult trees that are over three years old, it is necessary to apply phosphorus-potassium fertilization. It will nourish the cherry and stimulate the growth of buds and flowers.

In the fourth year of growth, when the roots are already well-formed, trees begin to need much more nutrients. Then you need to make a 30 cm wide depression around the trunk, add 150-180 grams of urea, bury it, and water it.

When the trees are 5 years old, then in addition to nitrogen and urea, wood ash, superphosphate (100 g), and a bucket of humus and potassium salt should also be added around the trunk.

Cherry trees will be considered old when they are 8 years old. Therefore, for them to continue to produce a good harvest, it is worth applying three times as much fertilizer.

Signs that the tree lacks nutrients

  • If few flower buds are formed, the leaves become less bright, and the berries crumble, there is a lack of phosphorus;
  • If there are few shoots and leaves, the color of the crown has faded, and a brown border has appeared on the leaves – there is a lack of magnesium;
  • If the leaves become smaller and the fruits look unattractive, there is a lack of potassium;
  • If the leaves turn yellow and slow down in development, there is a lack of nitrogen;
  • If the tree develops poorly or suffers from bitter pit, there is a lack of calcium.
