Wilted seedlings can be saved by correcting care mistakes. Source: Created with the help of AI

Sometimes it happens that initially healthy and beautiful seedlings suddenly begin to turn pale or yellow. This can be very disturbing for a novice gardener. Therefore, it is important to know what to do in such cases.

Experts say that it is possible to return the seedlings to a healthy appearance. OBOZ.UA learned about the causes of the problem and how to fix it.

Why do seedlings turn pale and turn yellow

In general, changes in the appearance of young plants are caused by mistakes in seedling care. These include:

  • excessive watering and stagnation of water in the soil;
  • violation of the temperature regime;
  • lack of fresh air;
  • lack of light (if the seedlings are kept in too bright a place, the leaves will first turn light green and then turn yellow);
  • lack of space for the development of the root system;
  • damage to the roots;
  • transplanting errors that disrupt the process of root nutrition of the plant;
  • lack of fertilization.

Most of these problems can be solved if the plant is sick, and the seedlings can be restored to a healthy appearance. Next, let's talk about how to do it.

How to save yellowed seedlings

The first step is to check the conditions of the young plants, check the advice on watering and fertilizing, lighting and irrigation for a particular crop. Once the problem is identified, take action.

Excessive moisture - stop watering until the soil dries to within an inch of the surface. Then reduce the amount of water you apply to the plant.

Low temperature - to stop the seedlings from freezing, move them to a warmer room. You can also cover the plants with foil or mini-greenhouses.

Oxygen starvation - loosen the soil around the seedlings to improve air access to the roots. Do not allow the soil to become dense and hard.

Lack of lighting - install additional lighting over the place where you are growing the seedlings. Ideally, this should be a phytolamp, but a regular lighting device will do. The length of daylight hours for seedlings should not be less than 10, and preferably 12 hours. But don't forget that nighttime dimming is also necessary for seedlings.

Lack of space - transplant the seedlings into a larger container. Be sure to take care of drainage to ensure optimal watering and additional oxygen. This is especially important while the plant is taking root.

Problems with the root system - give the seedlings time to recover on their own. But take special care of them during the rehabilitation period.

Lack of nutrition - water the young plants with a solution of a suitable fertilizer. But remember that for seedlings, its concentration should be about half the full dose. To feed the seedlings, a homemade fertilizer based on several nutrients is well suited. Prepare it by mixing 35 grams of superphosphate and 5 grams of urea and dissolving them in 10 liters of water.
