How to get rid of couch grass in the garden

Digging up

The mechanical method of removing couch grass is the most difficult but most effective. For this, a pitchfork is used. They are used to undermine the ground, and then manually remove the remains of weeds and their roots from it.

Planting green manure

Green manure is also called green fertilizer. These are plants that quickly gain green mass and, after mowing, enrich and protect the soil. You can sow, for example, buckwheat, rye, rapeseed, clover, peas, beans, etc.

Mulching

This method is good for cases where digging up the beds can harm the crops that are already growing on them.

If you block the couch grass's access to sunlight with grass clippings, straw, or agrofibre, it will start to die. However, this method will only be effective if the weed has not grown too much.

Chemical agents

You can also find many herbicides on the market that inhibit the root system of couch grass by acting through the leaves.
