More and more Ukrainian gardeners are starting to grow blueberries on their plots - with the right approach, this berry does not require complicated care. But sometimes they are disappointed with the result, because the harvest is not as sweet as blueberries from the store.

Correcting the situation will help to feed the plant properly. OBOZ.UA found out the secrets of experts that will help you grow a large and really tasty berry. You'll have to start by applying seasonally appropriate fertilizers in the spring.

How to properly fertilize blueberries

In general, work to improve the soil under the berry can be divided into two types. The first is to ensure the correct acidity, because blueberries grow well and produce only on acidic soils. This must be monitored constantly to ensure that optimal conditions are maintained at all times.

But fertilizing in the spring under the berry needs to be done twice. The first is in late March or early April, when the buds begin to swell on the bush. This will allow the plant to grow actively enough and build up the necessary green mass. The second time you need to add nutrients after the blueberries have faded to ensure that they successfully set the ovaries. This period is in May or early June.

In the fall, the bushes are fertilized once. After the harvest, blueberries need phosphorus and potassium to overwinter well.

How to fertilize blueberries in spring

Nitrogen-containing fertilizers are best suited for the very first feeding of blueberries in the season. They will help the plant with the formation of foliage and flowering. It is best to use ammonium sulfate or nitroammophos at this stage. Urea or ammonium nitrate are also suitable. First, water the plants properly, then pour the required dose of fertilizer under the bush, and then cover the soil with mulch to ensure that the nitrogen is well absorbed.

After flowering, the plant needs potassium sulfate and magnesium sulfate to form the ovary. These fertilizers will help to grow large, juicy and really sweet berries. Choose warm weather to apply such fertilizers, ideally in the morning or evening after rain.

Which fertilizers are not suitable for blueberries

Under no circumstances should ash, litter, manure, or humus be used to fertilize the berry. These agents reduce acidity and make it more alkaline. And in such conditions, blueberries cannot produce a really good harvest.
