Metal patio furniture is a great investment in quality decoration and comfort. However, rust that has accumulated on tables, swings, or chairs can make the entire space look neglected and unattractive.

An eco-friendly and budget-friendly tool that you probably already have in your kitchen will come in handy. House Digest has told you how to clean furniture and fences from rust.

The ingredients you need

White vinegar is an effective, natural, and budget-friendly household tool that will be the perfect solution. It will help clean rusty outdoor furniture so that it shines like new.

First of all, wipe the furniture with a microfiber cloth to remove surface dirt and dust. Then prepare your inventory:

  • white vinegar;
  • salt;
  • a spray bottle;
  • a metal brush or steel wool.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Fill the spray bottle with vinegar and add one to two teaspoons of salt. The salt will increase the acidity of the vinegar, which will improve effectiveness.
  2. Now spray the rusty furniture with the vinegar solution and leave it on for 15 minutes.
  3. Take your chosen cleaning tool and scrub the surface until the rust is completely removed. Depending on how badly the rust is embedded in the surface, you may need to reapply the product and clean it again.
  4. Rinse the furniture and dry it with a towel.

Why rust needs to be removed

Rust is a chemical process that occurs when iron or steel reacts with moisture and air, leading to corrosion. If left unchecked, corrosion will weaken the metal to the point where it loses its structural integrity – it can even cause holes in furniture.

Remember to cover or dry your metal furniture during the rainy season so that water does not interact with the metal for too long. You can also paint your outdoor furniture to create a physical barrier, thereby slowing down the growth of rust.

Remember that vinegar and salt can be harmful to plants and soil. It is better to spray the product on the sidewalk rather than watering rusty furniture on the lawn.
