When you buy new bedding, you may naturally assume that the linen is clean and immediately usable. However, this is not always the case. It's not that the sheets and pillowcases have already been used. At least, we would like to hope not. It's primarily about the factory packaging, which can damage the fabric.

New sheets really need to be washed for several reasons. Experts told us why you should wash your bedding after purchase and how best to do it.

At the production stage, bedding is often impregnated with a special solution that prevents the fabric from wrinkling. This is a kind of glue that makes the linen look attractive on store shelves.

Unlike starch, which makes fabrics stiffer, the sizing adds smoothness to the fibers. Remnants of this adhesive can remain on the sheets after purchase, so it is best to wash the sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases immediately.

"In addition to being uncomfortable, there is a risk that the chemicals used in the production process can cause skin irritation and allergies," say In The Wash experts.

Washing and drying in the open air will help eliminate stiffness and minimize the risk of skin reactions.

When it comes to the washing process, the first thing to do is to check the instructions on the label or package. The most common mistake is to overload the washing machine. Of course, you want to save time and electricity bills and wash all your clothes in one go, but overloading leads to a decrease in the quality of the wash. Water and powder will not be able to clean all the dirt, and the soap will remain between the fibers during the rinse stage.

Bedding is a breeding ground for bacteria, fungi, and dust mites. It is better to change it at least once a week. It is not necessary to wash at too high a temperature, which can even damage the fibers. With the right detergent, you can achieve effective cleaning at a safe temperature of 30 to 40 degrees.
