April is a busy time for gardeners. In the midst of spring, it's time to clean up the garden, fertilize the soil, plant seedlings, and set up a greenhouse. This is one of the most productive months of the year, and the future harvest largely depends on it.

OBOZ.UA has compiled a list of things to do in the garden in April. It is the second spring month that accounts for the largest number of plantings and sowings.

Tip 1: preparing the beds

Before active sowing and planting, the land should be properly prepared for the next season. The first step is to remove all debris and dig up the topsoil to saturate it with oxygen. The beds should be sprinkled with fertilizer - this is the key to a bountiful harvest and high-quality fruits.

Tip 2: setting up greenhouses

In April, you can either transplant or immediately sow the following crops in the greenhouse:

  • cabbage
  • cucumbers
  • tomatoes
  • sweet and hot peppers.

In addition, you can prepare seedlings of flowers: marigolds, dahlias, asters.

Tip 3: vegetables for seedlings

Most vegetables for seedlings are planted in March or even at the end of February. However, there are mid-season and late-season crops that should be planted in April:

  • tomatoes
  • cabbage
  • zucchini and squash
  • cucumbers
  • pumpkins.

April seedlings can be transplanted to beds in May.

Tip 4: sowing vegetables in the garden

In April, you can plant vegetables that are not afraid of frost in the open ground. For example, in early April, in the absence of sharp frosts, radishes, peas, and turnips are planted. The second half of April is ideal for planting dill, parsley, lettuce, celery, as well as early cabbage and early tomatoes. It is recommended to cover cabbage and tomatoes with foil before germination. At the end of April, you can plant onions, zucchini, pumpkins, and carrots. Potatoes are also planted in April.

Tip 5: arranging flower beds

Don't forget about gardening. The following flowers are planted in April:

  • marigolds
  • asters
  • phloxes
  • annual dahlias;
  • daisies
  • peonies
  • matthiols;
  • chrysanthemums;
  • irises.

In the second half of April, gardeners plant roses, but when it gets colder to +5 °C and below, the bushes should be covered with foil.

Tip 5: pruning and grafting trees

April pruning is aimed at removing dry and diseased branches. Weak trees should be tied to a peg.

In April, you can plant trees and berry bushes, including currants, blackberries, raspberries, grapes, and fruit trees.
