Peonies are a true symbol of spring bloom, and all thanks to their large, lush flowers. But how do you make the plant's buds look really huge?

Of course, to do this, you need to provide the plants with sufficient nutrition during the period when they are just breaking out of the ground. Fertilizers applied at this time allow peony bushes to build up an impressive leaf mass and develop truly lush buds. OBOZ.UA tells you how to feed the plant during the period of intensive growth.

What fertilizers to choose

Experienced gardeners know that NPK fertilizers should be applied to peony bushes in the spring. They contain all three key substances for the healthy development of plants:

  • nitrogen – necessary for thick and large leaves;
  • phosphorus – supports the root system and improves the plant's absorption of nutrients;
  • potassium – enhances plant metabolism and helps ensure lush flowering.

Each of these elements has its own optimal time of application.

The first fertilization

As soon as the snow melts in the garden, it's time to apply nitrogen and potassium. One bush needs 10-15 grams of nitrogen and 10-20 grams of potassium. Fertilize according to the instructions.

The second fertilization

As soon as you notice that buds have begun to form on the plant, it needs all three fertilizers. Calculate them so that the bush has 10-15 grams of nitrogen, 15-20 grams of phosphorus, and 10-15 grams of potassium.

The third fertilization

The third spring feeding will help the plant recover from flowering. It is carried out a week or two after the flower has finally faded. At this stage, it no longer needs nitrogen, but each bush will need 15-20 grams of phosphorus and 10-15 grams of potassium to maintain its health.
