A common mistake that makes towels stiff: what not to do when washing

Do you know this problem – no matter how many times you wash your towels, no matter what detergents you use, they remain stiff and prickly? If so, you're probably making a few common mistakes when it comes to towel care.

Experts have named these mistakes. OBOZ.UA asked them for their advice on how to fix it. And even return the towels to their original softness. And also significantly extend the life of bath textiles.

Washing temperature

It is believed that washing at low temperatures is more delicate for different types of fabrics. But this is not always true for towels. Therefore, pay attention to the recommendations on the product label. Often, it contains a piece of advice to wash towels at 60 degrees. This not only removes dirt from the fabric more efficiently but also allows for greater hygiene.

If you use a tumble dryer, however, you should dry such items at a medium temperature. Or choose the fluffing mode to give your towels extra softness.

Excessive use of detergents

The idea that a generous portion of detergent will make towels cleaner is a misconception. Terry cloth is designed in such a way that it retains water along with everything that is dissolved in it, so excessive detergents often have the opposite effect – they make bath textiles stiffer.

Modern laundry powders and gels are very effective and will work even if you use them in a dosage that is less than the one specified in the instructions. To neutralize the excess, wash your towels in hot water with white vinegar once a month. It will dissolve everything that has settled on the fibers of the fabric and restore its softness.

Using fabric softener

Fabric softeners smell nice and can be effective, for example, against the accumulation of static charge on synthetic materials. However, the way fabric softeners work is by enveloping the fibers, which has the opposite effect on towels made from natural fabrics, making them stiffer. Therefore, it is better to avoid this type of product in their care. Periodic washing with vinegar will do a better job of conditioning towels.
