When creating fashionable looks, Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton often draws on the experience of royalty. For example, Princess Diana inspired her to alter old outfits by her example. This gives worn-out (or outdated) clothes a new life and helps to take care of the environment. But Queen Elizabeth II taught her something else: to always remember the hidden meanings and social messages of outfits. For example, after the UK withdrew from the European Union, the monarch attended the first opening of the Parliament in 2017 wearing a blue hat with yellow splashes (which are the main colors of the EU flag). This is how she demonstrated her disapproval of Brexit...

We decided to find out what secret meanings some of Kate Middleton's outfits have. Read more in the OBOZ.UA article.

1. Wedding dress

In April 2011, Kate Middleton and Prince William of Wales had a lavish wedding. The bride wore a luxurious dress by Alexander McQueen. What is its peculiarity? There are embroidered roses, thistles, daffodils and shamrocks on the sleeves, which are the national emblems of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The embroidery technique also had a conceptual meaning. It is the Irish carrickmacross, which dates back to the seventeenth century. With it, the princess demonstrated her respect for ancient traditions.

2. Polka dot outfit

In February 2022, when Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine began, the Duchess visited the Ukrainian community center Reading. There she met with Ukrainian families who had taken refuge in the UK. She wore a dark blue dress with yellow polka dots, which does not repeat the shades of one and one, but hints at the colors of the Ukrainian national flag. On the same day, grateful visitors presented Katherine with a bouquet of blue and yellow flowers and ribbons, which organically complemented her eloquent image.

It should be noted that the Princess of Wales has repeatedly reminded the public through her actions and outfits that it is worth helping Ukraine in the war against Russian invaders. For example, in October 2023, during her visit to the Vsi Razom community center, she made a blue and yellow jewelry with her own hands, which she later wore on her chest. And especially for the opening of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 grand final, the princess played "Stefania" on the piano (a song by the Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra, which won the Eurovision Song Contest 2022).

3. Yellow blazer

Kate Middleton's wardrobe has a huge palette of shades: from restrained pastels to spectacular saturated ones. One of them she rarely wears is buttercup. If she does choose it, she puts a special meaning into it. So, in October 2023, the Princess and Prince of Wales visited Birmingham and took part in a forum on the occasion of World Mental Health Day. Catherine wore a deep yellow blazer, which emphasized the importance of emotional well-being. The fact is that yellow is associated in psychology with joy, optimism, happiness, friendliness, and self-confidence. It evokes a sense of comfort and peace.

4. Dress with poppies

In August 2017, Kate Middleton visited Princess Diana's memorial garden near Kensington Palace. She was wearing a white and green Prada dress. The abundance of poppies on the outfit is a tribute to her late mother-in-law.

Another interesting detail of the look is the elegant bow collar. This is also not just a design decision. It was once favored by Lady Dee: the bow adorned her dresses, blouses, shirts, and jackets.

5. Dress with golden eagles

During her royal tours, Prince William's wife often wears clothes by designers from the countries she visits (or originally from). For example, in July 2017, in Heidelberg, she wore a sleeveless dress made by German-born London designer Marcus Lupfer. The piece had a distinctive print: a lot of golden eagles with outstretched wings. Since these are the national birds of Germany, Catherine used them to demonstrate solidarity between the countries (Germany and the UK).

6. Dark green dress

In 2018, with the emergence of Time's Up (a non-profit organization that raises money to support victims of sexual harassment), celebrities wore black outfits on the red carpet in solidarity.

Kate Middleton also supported this movement, but in a slightly different way... In February 2018, she attended the BAFTA Film Awards in a dark green Jenny Packham dress with a black belt at the waist. The green color is a subtle hint to another movement that gained popularity in the nineteenth century. The movement of women suffragettes. They fought for women's suffrage and opposed discrimination in political, social, and economic life. Suffragettes wore green as a symbol of hope for global change.

7. A red dress

On April 23, 2018, Kate Middleton gave birth to her third child, Prince Louis. It happened in the morning, and in the afternoon she was discharged from St. Mary's Hospital. Then, when she stepped out onto the porch of the medical facility, she pleasantly shocked her fans. The Duchess wore a light red dress with a white collar by Jenny Packham. Princess Diana wore a similarly colored look (see photos below): in 1984 when she was discharged from the hospital with the newborn Prince Harry. Obviously, Catherine paid tribute to her with her clothes.

It should be added that Louis was born on St. George's Day, which is considered the patron saint of the British. So, the colors of the princess's outfit also hinted at the national flag of England (a white cloth with the red cross of St. George).
