If you combine pixie and mallet, you get the trend of the season. The new trend is called "mixie" – it's a versatile hairstyle that can be worn loose and layered or straight and slicked back for a classic vintage aesthetic.

This haircut is usually combined with bangs. Real Simple editors spoke with an expert hairstylist to find out what it takes to maintain a trendy haircut and how to determine if it's the right haircut for you.

What does a "mixie" look like

"Mixie" has several variations, ranging from ultra-short strands to shaggy ones. "A mixed haircut is a combination of pixie and mallet haircuts," says salon owner Nunzio Saviano. The haircut has "short bangs, uneven layers at the front and top, short sides, and longer length with longer layers at the back." If everything is clear with the pixie, then it's time to understand what a mallet is. A mallet is a hairstyle that involves short-cropped hair in the front and sides, and long strands in the back.

"The mixie cut is suitable for all face shapes and works well with most hair textures, including curly hair," says Saviano, "The only hair texture I don't recommend this cut for is fine hair. Thin strands won't have the natural volume to accentuate the frizzy layers, so the finished result can look a little "flat."

How to maintain and style your haircut

The "mixie" is considered a haircut that needs regular trims about every 4-6 weeks, depending on your hair growth. An alternative is to let your hair grow out to make it look shaggy, in which case you should visit your hairdresser every 8-12 weeks.

If you have a normal hair type, styling requires significantly less maintenance than cutting. Thin and straight hair may require more product and styling to keep tousled layers in place. For people with thicker hair, daily styling is a blow-dry that doesn't take more than 20 minutes.

Saviano suggests applying the mousse to damp strands and letting them dry. For a curly and wavy effect, you can detangle your hair and use a diffuser to speed up the process. Use a texture spray to add texture and shine. The most time-consuming part will be styling the bangs, if necessary.
