Have a cheap look. Fashion experts have named 6 trends that you wouldn't wear in 2024
It's safe to say that no fashionista has the goal of dressing "cheap". So no matter how much you spend, you always aim to look put together and stylish.
The editors of fashion publication Who What Wear have put together 6 trends that will cheapen your look. The experts balanced the list with alternatives that will be popular come fall.
No: Lacquered shoes
Yes: Mesh shoes
"Perhaps it's because they're so obviously plastic, or because so many mass-market stores try to emulate designer models, but personally, I'll never be a fan of patent shoes," admits deputy editor Maxine Eggenberger. - For me, there's nothing precious about seeing a foot hiding behind a transparent glossy layer. Instead, I prefer mesh shoes, which will be very popular this season. It creates the same effect, but the diffusion that the mesh fabric forms is much more elegant, at least in my opinion."
No: Open-shouldered tops
Yes: Vests as tops
"I love open-shouldered tops...on other people. I don't know why, but they just don't work for me," says editor-in-chief Poppy Nash. - I live in jeans, and while that combination works well on other people, I like something more structured. That's why I'm favoring vests over tops this season."
No: Ripped jeans
Yes: Classic jeans
"I used to wear ripped jeans a lot, but last year, after getting a new pair with a frayed hem, I realized they looked so much better," says editor Florrie Alexander. - While ripped jeans certainly still have a place and time, if you're looking for a quick change to make your outfits look more polished, I recommend trying this particular option. After all, classic jeans will always look stylish."
No: Multicolored bags
Yes: Two-color bags
"Last year, a lot of multicolored or ombré bags came to the forefront - so much so that I even invested in one," says shopping editor Remy Farrell. - Of all my bags, however, this is the one I reach for the least, as it doesn't look as expensive as the others."
No: Jersey skirts
Yes: Pleated skirts
"Jersey is a staple in my closet, especially in the form of dresses and tops. However, there's something about a jersey skirt that seems to cling to me in all the places I don't want it to and always feels a bit cheap," says Eggenberger. But pleated midis, which seem to be back again this season, look much more sophisticated."
No: Clothing with butterflies
Yes: Floral accents
"I realize it's a trend that comes from the '90s and 2000s, but to me, tops with butterflies and things with butterflies in general will always seem a little cheap," says editor-in-chief Anna Almasy. - But I like more the trend of flowers, which do not lose relevance over the past few seasons".
