"Depending on your emotional state, we often gravitate towards certain notes for specific occasions," says fragrance expert Emma. "For example, the tiare flower is a tropical flower that is common in the South Pacific, especially near water and around beaches."

That is, people who have traveled to places where tiare (also known as gardenia) grows can take home a memory of the scent that will forever remain associated with that particular place.

The expert says that many people invest in destination scents for special occasions. The right perfume can really bring an event or moment to mind because of the psychological impact it can have.

How to wear destination scents

What's interesting about scents is that there is a unique science behind them.

"Perfumers measure the variability of molecules to control the nature and evolution of a fragrance. Different notes in a perfume are combined to hit the air at different times," explains perfume expert Johnny Webber.

For example, summer and winter scents have opposite odors because of the way they interact with the skin. In the same vein, destination scents are created to allow the wearer to experience the history, place, and time they once knew.

Since destination scents are meant to tap into our memories, how you choose to wear them depends on your past and preferences. Beach memories are likely to be full of coconut and salty scents, while memories of the Tuileries Gardens in Paris might inspire you to search for a specific flower.

Destination scents come down to what you want to evoke and the energy you want to share with the people around you.
