For a long time, there were basically two main types of foundations available on the market: long-lasting and matte or shiny and light, on which makeup depended. The modern cosmetics industry offers a wide range of products with a different set of qualities, and thus the question arose of how to apply them correctly.

OBOZ.UA asked makeup artists who have tried different variants of modern foundations for advice. They advise you to focus on your skin type and expectations from makeup - whether you want a matte finish or a light glow. Here are the steps you need to take to get the perfect coverage under any conditions.

Choose the right shade

To create a natural look, it's important to find the right depth and shade of foundation for your complexion. Determine your color type - neutral, warm, or cool. There are special online services that can help you with this. The color of the product should match your skin tone.

Set expectations for your foundation

Foundation used to be matte or shiny, with no in-between options. Today, we have the luxury of choice, and it is quite possible to choose a product with any desired properties. However, no matter what you choose, start by applying a moisturizer to help hydrate your skin and make it smoother. And then focus on your needs or desires. For example, if you're going to be photographed a lot, choose a matte product that won't cause light spots from flashes to appear on your face. Also, don't be afraid to experiment and mix products with different properties. For example, add a little moisturizer to dense textures.

Apply the product correctly

The way you apply your foundation is entirely up to you. Makeup artists do not have a definitive recommendation on this matter. If you like to apply the foundation with your fingers, do it that way, or use a sponge or brush, or even both. The warmth from your hands will help to distribute the product evenly over the skin, the sponge will ensure a really uniform and flawless application, and the brush will help you use a minimum of cream and still do a good job on such difficult areas of the face as the eyes, nose, and lip contour.

Whichever method you choose, start applying the foundation in the center of the face and work your way out to the edges. Concentrate on the areas that need the most foundation. Usually, these are the places where there is unwanted pigmentation. At the same time, don't be afraid to skip areas where there is no great need for foundation. If everything is shaded well, such makeup will look even more natural.
