Restrained elegance: 5 Meghan Markle looks inspired by US first ladies. Photo
When the American actress and model Meghan Markle married Prince Harry (and was named the Duchess of Sussex), her style changed significantly: from provocative and daring to restrained and sophisticated. How did she do it? Firstly, fashion experts helped her revise her wardrobe, and secondly, she began to draw inspiration from the looks of US first ladies of different eras: from Jacqueline Kennedy to Melania Trump.
In the OBOZ.UA material, we have prepared a selection of the outfits of the Duchess and the wives of presidents that are incredibly similar to each other. Meghan has skillfully adapted her looks to modern trends, as well as to her own color type and body features.
1. Double-breasted dress
In May 1965, the 35th First Lady of the United States, Jacqueline Kennedy, an icon of style and elegance, arrived in Adleston (UK) for the unveiling of the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial. She wore an ivory coat dress by Oleg Cassini and a pillbox hat by Roy Halston. She complemented her look with milk-colored gloves, a pearl necklace, a black leather bag and kitten heels. Many years have passed. In June 2018, at Buckingham Palace, Meghan Markle repeated this look at the Young Leaders Awards ceremony. However, in a modern interpretation. She wore a double-breasted jacket and an asymmetrical skirt from Prada, slingback shoes and a black leather clutch.
2. Silk dress
In May 1973, the wife of the 40th President of the United States Ronald Reagan, First Lady Nancy Reagan, visited the Century Plaza Hotel (Los Angeles) in a milky silk maxi dress with a spectacular halter neck and laconic ring earrings. Meghan Markle seems to have fallen in love with this delicate look. After all, in April 2024, she chose a similar outfit with a halter neck (but in the form of a stand-up collar and with a large decorative bow) and a small cutout in the solar plexus area for the Royal Salute Polo Challenge polo match in Florida. She complemented her outfit with massive gold bracelets and round earrings.
3. Black maxi dress
One of the most talked about dresses of Hillary Clinton, wife of the 42nd President of the United States Bill Clinton, is a black silhouette dress with cutouts on the shoulders and a halter neck by Donna Karan. On February 1, 1993, the first lady wore it to a banquet at the White House. The Duchess of Sussex had a similar outfit. In 2023, at the Invictus Games, she wore a black knitted dress from the Toteme brand and matching pumps.
4. Yellow sheath dress
In July 2009, Michelle Obama, the wife of the 44th President of the United States Barack Obama, chose beige pumps and a spectacular silhouette dress by Jason Wu for her official visit to Rome, which she decorated with a bright green brooch. This look was in perfect harmony with the first lady's color type! And in July 2018, Meghan Markle wore a similar mustard-colored dress by Brandon Maxwell for a meeting with Your Commonwealth youth in London, which she also complemented with beige shoes.
5. Red maxi dress
The Duchess of Sussex most often draws inspiration from the looks of Melania Trump, the wife of American political leader and 45th President of the United States Donald Trump. Perhaps this is due to the fact that both have a dark skin color and a rectangular body shape (with a low waist, as well as proportional shoulders and hips).
Thus, in 2019, Melania Trump visited the Winfield House mansion (London) wearing an exquisite strawberry red dress with cap sleeves by Givenchy. She styled the look with red shoes and diamond earrings. And in 2020, Meghan Markle wore an almost identical Safiyaa outfit, but in cinnamon color, with shorter sleeves and a different neck, at the Mountbatten Music Festival (in the Royal Albert Hall of Arts and Sciences). She completed the look with ruby earrings, a satin bag and red shoes.
