How to make your lips as moisturized as possible: a secret technique
The sensitive skin of the lips is particularly vulnerable to external factors. Lips can start to crack and peel due to excessive dryness. Regular care is especially important because lips do not have sebaceous glands to keep them moisturized and soft.
Skin damage is usually caused by exposure to too cold, windy, or hot weather. Persistent dryness of the lips, which does not depend on irritants, can be the result of a deficiency of vitamins and minerals in the body. Experts tell us how to make your lips as moisturized as possible.
How to moisturize your lips
Makeup artists have long suggested using the lip slugging technique – by carefully following the procedures, you don't have to constantly moisturize your lips throughout the day.
The idea is to restore the skin barrier by mixing different textures and products – this will help soothe chapped dry lips in the long run.
Dr. Shah (@dermdoctor) advises applying a soft moisturizer first, and then a thick ointment or even petroleum jelly. The main thing is to do this before going to bed so that the components are absorbed into the skin overnight.
Skincare specialist April Bassi also offers an alternative lip care routine that includes the use of a nighttime lip mask and petroleum jelly.
"Lip masks, unfortunately, don't have enough hydrocarbon chains to keep your lips from drying out, and petroleum jelly can lock in moisture," advises Basi.
Dermatologist Lindsey Zubritsky emphasized that some lipsticks and lip balms contain flavors that can cause contact dermatitis, so you should choose the most natural formulation possible.
Why lips dry out
Experts identify a number of reasons that can cause dry lips in combination and separately. The provoking factors are:
- insufficient drinking regimen – a lack of moisture in the body is also the cause of drying out of the skin of the lips;
- windy, cold, frosty weather – unfavorable factors cause a decrease in the elasticity of the epidermis;
- air conditioners and heaters – dry air, which is usually produced by these devices, evaporates moisture from the skin;
- Lack of vitamins and minerals – you should pay attention to the level of vitamin B, zinc and iron;
- collagen deficiency – the loss of collagen in the body, which usually occurs with age, can negatively affect the softness of the lips;
- low-quality cosmetics – decorative cosmetics, in particular, matte lipsticks, dry out the lips;
- sunlight – lips quickly burn in the heat because they do not contain as much melanin as the skin;
- alcohol consumption – when drinking alcoholic beverages, the body consumes a lot of vitamin B.
